9 Army officers dead in north Thailand chopper crash
BANGKOK (The Nation/ANN) -- All nine Army officers, including Maj-General Songphol Thongjeen, a deputy commander of the Third Army Region, were killed in a helicopter crash yesterday evening in Phayao, north Thailand.
Two bodies fell into a deep muddy pond and an effort to retrieve them was underway last night. The crash site in Muang district had been sealed off to protect personal belongings, weapons and confidential documents that were scattered.
The US-made UH-1 helicopter was returning from duty and lost contact for 10 minutes, before villagers in tambon Tha Wong Thong reported seeing it crash at 5:30pm.
